On September 13 and 14, 2024, Deaf Row Fest celebrated its 10th anniversary, and Metal Addiction was on-site for the second day of this momentous event. Held at the iconic Kassablanca in Jena, the venue offered more than just a place for live music; it provided an immersive experience. Known for its dedication to cultural diversity and alternative music, Kassablanca is a venue where the underground thrives. The intimate setting, paired with an eclectic lineup spanning black metal, post-rock, and doom, made for an unforgettable evening.

Hæresis: A Devastating Start with Atmospheric Black Metal

Opening the night, Hæresis wasted no time in enveloping the crowd with their blend of extreme and atmospheric black metal. Frontwoman Tine commanded the stage with unrelenting energy, her vocals cutting through the storm of blast beats and harmonized riffs. The combination of relentless aggression and eerie, atmospheric interludes painted an immersive sonic landscape that transported the audience into the depths of blackened chaos. Tine’s piercing shrieks, countered by moments of haunting melody, left a lasting impression as Hæresis set the bar high for the evening.

Suffocate For Fuck Sake: An Intense and Cathartic Emotional Journey

Next up, Suffocate For Fuck Sake delivered an emotionally charged performance that stood out not only for its intensity but for its intricate fusion of post-hardcore, sludge, and spoken-word elements. The band’s music is raw and cathartic, and their rare live appearance was met with palpable excitement. The fusion of brooding instrumentals and poignant samples evoked a whirlwind of emotions, addressing themes of loss, despair, and personal struggle. Each song felt like a dialogue between the performers and the audience, pulling them deeper into the band’s introspective world.

EF: Hypnotic and Emotional Soundscapes

The mood shifted as EF took the stage, captivating the audience with their signature post-rock soundscapes. Known for creating sprawling sonic landscapes, the band delivered a set that was as mesmerizing as it was emotional. Tomas Torsson’s soothing vocals layered perfectly with the intricate melodies, creating a familiar yet immersive atmosphere. Fans had eagerly awaited EF’s return to Deaf Row Fest, and the band did not disappoint. Their ability to build tension through crescendos of sound was hypnotic, leaving the crowd swaying in collective euphoria.

E-L-R: Hypnotic Doom and Metal with an Overwhelming Presence

E-L-R followed, bringing a darker, more hypnotic energy to the stage. Their blend of doom metal, tinged with black metal influences, cast a spell over the audience. Bassist I.R. and guitarist S.M. shared vocal duties, their ethereal voices weaving in and out of the dense, distorted instrumentals. The band’s music is immersive, slow-burning, and haunting, as each note seemed to linger in the air, suspended between beauty and dread. E-L-R’s set felt like an otherworldly journey, as if the music itself was a ritual to awaken something ancient and powerful within the crowd.

40 Watt Sun: A Heart-Wrenching and Emotional Finale

Closing out the night was 40 Watt Sun, and they did so in heart-wrenching fashion. Patrick Walker’s voice, fragile yet resolute, carried the weight of sorrow and reflection with each note. The emotional depth of his performance reached its peak during the last two songs, where he took the stage solo, leaving the audience in stunned silence. The final track, “Stages,” was especially powerful, with its melancholic lyrics and delicate guitar work. Many in the crowd were visibly moved, and it was nearly impossible not to tear up as the festival came to a close on this raw and intimate note.

A Decade of Culture and Community at Deaf Row Fest

The 10th anniversary of Deaf Row Fest was a celebration of not only music but of community and emotion. Every band brought something unique, adding to the rich tapestry of the evening, and leaving those in attendance with memories that will last well beyond the final note. Metal Addiction was honored to witness such a special event, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this beloved festival.
